A well-maintained lawn is the perfect green foil. It gives multiple benefits, such as a great setting for summer picnics and even a foraging ground for birds and other wildlife. Advent Lawn Care show you how to keep your lawn looking its best all year round.
How To Care For Your Lawn
In dry summers, you should water your lawn with stored rainwater and grey water to prevent it from going brown. To bring your lawn back to life, you should use a garden fork to poke holes in the turf. This will help air and water reach the roots and thus keep your lawn looking healthy and green.
1. Mow Your Lawn Regularly.
You should cut or lawn mowing at least once a week in the summer and once every two weeks during spring, autumn, and warm winters. If you regularly trim your lawn, it will encourage the roots to spread and thus fill the gaps and block out.
2. Water Your Lawn
You should constantly water your lawns but don’t overwater. This is because, if you overwater it will cause your lawn to root shallowly and establish poorly. Sprinklers are perfect for keeping lawns hydrated but they use a lot of mains water and are not permitted during a hosepipe ban. Note that you should use rainwater from a water butt or grey water from your bath or washing-up bowl where possible.
3. Weed Your Lawn
Plantains and dandelions are troublesome weeds that can quickly spread and choke out your lawn. They have broad leaves that can smother grass, but they’re relatively easy to pull up by hand. Yellow medick, buttercups, and clover can also be problematic. These weeds can spread quickly, so raking your lawn before mowing can help to loosen them and expose them to the mower blades, which can weaken and eventually kill them.
Furthermore, you should try to avoid using weedkiller. Chemical weedkillers can be expensive and don’t tackle poor grass health, which helps weeds to thrive. If you feel you need to use one, try a homemade weed killer instead.
4. Relieve Compacted Grass
Compacted ground prevents grass from growing well and can lead to bare patches in the summer and mud baths in the winter. To relieve the compaction and aerate the soil, you should push a garden fork about 10cm deep into the soil every 10cm and gently rock back and forth on the fork handle. The prongs open up the soil and thus allow the roots to breathe and encourage the grass to regrow.
