It can be tough to resist the temptation of trampling all over your fresh new sod installation. After all, taking a walk or running on that soft, green carpet is just so tempting. However, if you want your sod to grow strong and healthy, you need to stay off it for a while – and we’re not talking about a few days! Today, Advent Lawn Care tell you how long you should wait before venturing onto your new sod.
What Is Sod?
Sod is the top layer of grass that is cut and used to cover other areas. It includes soil and grass. In some places, people call it “turf” instead of “sod.”
Pre-Installation
Taking care of new sod starts before you even plant it. The soil needs to be wet before you put the sod down. Dry soil will take the water out of the sod and make it hard for it to grow. Also, you should add fertilizer to the soil before you plant the sod.
Post-Installation Measures
First Day
Water your new sod right after you plant it. Water it a lot until it goes into the soil a few inches. The ground should feel wet when you walk on it. Check the sod every few hours. If the ground is not still wet, water it again.
First Two Weeks After Day One
Water the sod many times a day for short periods during the first two weeks. Water it in the morning and afternoon. Furthermore, you should water it 2 to 6 times daily for 4 to 6 minutes, depending on the temperature. The hotter it is, the more you should water it.
After Two Weeks
After you mow the grass for the first time, water it less often but for a longer time each time. The roots are now stronger and can handle more water. Keep doing this for a few weeks until you only water the grass once a day, or even just one to three times a week, depending on the season.
FAQs
How Long After Installing Sod Can You Walk On It?
You should wait two weeks before you mow or walk on your new sod. This will give the roots time to grow.
Will Sod Lines Go Away?
As your sod grows, the grass will get longer and the lines between the pieces of sod will disappear. How long this takes depends on the type of sod you got. It should take 4 to 6 weeks for the lines to go away.
How Long Does It Take For Sod To Look Good?
If you’ve successfully laid down and cared for your sod, it should set shallow roots within two weeks. It will be fully installed and ready to go within a month or two.
